Domain Name Registration

One of the first things you need to do when preparing to set up a real estate website is to register a personal domain name. Domain names are unique names that the Internet uses to identify a particular website, for example, Google.com, Yahoo.com, Realtor.com or CaySystems.com.

When you use a domain name in your browser's address bar prefaced by www. or http://www. the browser will take you to the server that hosts your website and then displays the home page.

Selecting a Name

When selecting a domain name it's wise to keep it as short as possible and make it memorable. Think of it this way, if you were driving by a house and your domain name was on a rider on the top of one of your real estate yard signs would you be able to read it and remember it as you drove by?

If you're thinking about using your name as part of the domain name do so only if it's easy to spell and remember.

Domain names can have many different extensions but the most popular is .com. Others you might use are .net, .info, .us or .biz but .com is always the first choice.

Using Hyphens in Your Domain Name

You can also use hyphens in your domain names but it's usually better not to as users many times forget to type the hyphens which means they end up at another webiste that isn't yours.

However, it is a good idea to register your primary domain name using hyphens just to protect your turf so to speak. For example, if your primary domain name is DenverRealEstate.com you should also register Denver-Real-Estate.com. This secondary domain can be forwarded to the same website as the primary domain so if someone does use it they end up at the same place.

Protecting Your Brand Name

If you are developing a brand and your domain name is part of that branding you may want to register the domain with the other extensions such as .net, .info, .us and .biz just so that no one else can register these names and infringe on your branding. It's cheap insurance that can give you peace of mind.

Domains for Niches

You can also register additional names for specific niches such as a subdivision like HighlandsRanchHomes.com or a type of property like DowntownLofts.com. These names can then be forwarded to a specific page on your website that is about that niche.

Don't forget to register your own name, for example, JoeBrown.com - you never know when this could come in handy and of course there will only be one domain available like this in the whole world.
